Research emphasis: The major focus of Dr. Mitchell's research is to investigate the molecular pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in transgenic mouse models. HSV is an important human pathogen and is closely related to a number of important pathogens of domestic animals. His major efforts have been concentrated on investigating the mechanism by which the virus remains latent in sensory ganglionic neurons and understanding the pathogenesis of HSV induced inflammation of ocular structures such as cornea and conjunctiva.
