The SCAAFP at the University of Missouri is a newly formed club as of Spring 2002. It is a student chapter of the American Association of Feline Practioners (AAFP).
The SCAAFP introduces veterinary students to the goals and objectives
of the AAFP and helps students interested in feline medicine and surgery develop
further knowledge and appreciation of the field. Student chapter members work
toward these goals by presenting lecture programs on feline subjects and performing
community service activities.
The club's first activity featured Dr. Leah Cohn leading a wet lab, showing
students the steps involved in feline phyiscal examinations. Future activities
that the club has planned include a presentation by the Trap-Neuter-Release
Program being started by Erica Moore (VM-2 at UM), Kristen Cage (VM-2 at UM)
and Dr. Laura Hardin. The club is also inviting an animal behaviorist to lecture
on feline behavior, and practioners from feline-only practices to lecture
on the specialty and preceptorship opportunities.
In addition, each year the AAFP awards one senior student the Annual AAFP
Senior Award. This award is presented at each veterinary school to the
senior who demonstrates the highest dedication to feline medicine and surgery.
Cynthia Church was the recipient at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
