Bengal Facts:

Breed History: The breed originated in the late 1970's when a Californian breeder obtained eight females that were the offsprings of a cross between a domestic shorthair and an Asian Leopard cat. The cats were obtained from the University of California-Davis. She then bred these females with one of two males (and orange feral male and a brown spotted tabby male).

Breed Characteristics: Bengals have a large, muscular build with full muzzles with prominent whisker pads. Their eyes are large and almond-shaped and the color varies according to coat color. Their ears resemble the Asian Leopard Cat's ears and are short. The coat is soft and of medium length and combing helps to maintain it.
-Colors: marbled or spotted patterns in a brown tabby, seal lynx point, seal sepia tabby, or a seal mink tabby.
-Ground colors: Ivory, cream, yellow, buff, light tan, dark tan, golden, orange, mahogany.
-Pattern colors: Black, dark brown, brown, tan, chocolate, bitter chocolate, or cinnamon.
*The cheeks, chin, and throat are white.

Behavior: Bengals are alert, curious, friendly, active and intelligent and interestingly enough, unlike most domestic cats, are more than willing to wade in water. Bengals are also known to play fetch and lay at your feet similar to the behavior of a dog.

Cost: The price of a Bengal kitten varies dependent on where you obtain them. If your breeder focuses on breeding and showing, then the price may be around $1000-2000. If the breeder is more interested in providing good pets, then the price comes down to around $400-600. Be careful. Some people say that once you have a Bengal, you'll never want any other type of cat.

This Bengal exemplifies the spotted pattern.
