Dysautonomia Research

Dysautonomia was not recognized in the United States prior to the mid 1980's. Southwestern Missouri and the adjacent states experienced a dramatic surge of cases of this disease beginning in the late 1980's. Investigators at the University of Missouri and University of California San Diego are searching for the cause of this perplexing disease, but we need the help of veterinarians in the field who diagnose these cases. If you see a case of dysautonomia, please collect a serum sample and send it to Dr. O'Brien along with the information on the attached form. If you are unsure of the diagnosis, see the section on Diagnosis and Management of Dysautonomia in Dogs, or contact us for assistance.

Serum would need to be kept refrigerated and shipped overnight on ice. Euthanized animals may be submitted to the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory for confirmation of the diagnosis.

Sample submission forms to print from browser.
Note, you cannot fill out the form online. Please print the form and submit it with the serum sample. If you would like us to fax you a copy of the form or need assistance, contact us
