Information for Instructional Leaders

Examinations and Examination Schedules
Please contact Stephanie Bossaller in CVM Informational Technology to schedule ALL examinations (electronic and paper) at least two weeks prior to the start of an instructional period. She will reserve classrooms, assist with electronic exams, and aid in coordinating ADA or make-up exams. Examinations must be held during scheduled class times and be held to 50 minutes in length (unless they are held during a scheduled laboratory time that is longer than 50 minutes). Scheduling computer-based examinations may require that test be given outside of normally scheduled class time. Students should be made aware of this exception on the first day of class. These requirements are necessary to plan for and administer tests of appropriate length to those students with ADA accommodations and who are allowed additional testing time. Except for makeup examinations, tests should be of the same format for all students UNLESS there is an accommodation recommended by the Office of Disability Services. If you have questions regarding this matter, please contact the Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs (ADA representative) or the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Due to Federal regulations, examinations must be returned in a way that will prevent public disclosure of a test score. Thus, you should not post grades in public or return tests in mailboxes unless then are returned in an envelope or folded and stapled to prevent inadvertent disclosure of information. Please consult the site on FERPA regulations if you have any questions: http://registrar.missouri.edu/Policies_Rules_and_Regulations/ferpa.htm

Computer-based tests:
Due to time and space constraints, individual appointments in the IT office can no longer be utilized for student test review. If an instructor wishes to allow for student review of computer tests, they should schedule a review session (proctored by the instructor) for the class. The session may be scheduled in the computer/histology laboratory. Please contact Stephanie in the IT office to schedule such a session.

Instructor Evaluations:
Electronic instructor evaluations will be sent to students. If your course is team-taught, please contact Stephanie Bossaller to verify that all needed evaluations will be done. The number of students filling out evaluation will be greatly increased if you have them fill out the electronic evaluations during class time. Stephanie will assist you in coordinating the events necessary to get electronic evaluations to students during your class, if you elect to do this. Otherwise, evaluations will be sent to students to fill out during their free time.

Syllabus, ADA, Dishonesty, Intellectual Pluralism, Deficient Grades, and Grade Inflation:
Please make sure your course syllabus (or other first day hand-outs) contain information about ADA accommodations and a reminder that VM students are subject to college Honor Code which prohibits dishonesty. The college Honor Code is in the student handbook which can be downloaded here. Additional hard copies are available in the Office of Academic Affairs.

Sample statements about these subjects can be found on the Provost's web site at: http://provost.missouri.edu/faculty/syllabus.html

Sample statements (12/07) follow:

Sample Statement for Academic Dishonesty
Academic integrity is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards breaches of the academic integrity rules as extremely serious matters. Sanctions for such a breach may include academic sanctions from the instructor, including failing the course for any violation, to disciplinary sanctions ranging from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, collaboration, or any other form of cheating, consult the course instructor.

Sample Statement for ADA
If you need accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please inform me immediately. Please see me privately after class, or at my office.

Office location: _______________ Office hours: ______________

To request academic accommodations (for example, a notetaker), students must also register with the Office of Disability Services, (http://disabilityservices.missouri.edu), S5 Memorial Union, 882-4696. It is the campus office responsible for reviewing documentation provided by students requesting academic accommodations, and for accommodations planning in cooperation with students and instructors, as needed and consistent with course requirements. For other MU resources for students with disabilities, click on "Disability Resources" on the MU homepage.

Dr. Ron Cott is the CVM ADA representative. If you are approached by a student with a possible disability requesting accommodations, please notify him immediately. Disability accommodations are not granted unless the student is registered with the Office of Disability Services.

Sample Statement for Intellectual Pluralism
The University community welcomes intellectual diversity and respects student rights. Students who have questions concerning the quality of instruction in this class may address concerns to either the Departmental Chair or Divisional leader or Director of the Office of Students Rights and Responsibilities (http://osrr.missouri.edu/). All students will have the opportunity to submit an anonymous evaluation of the instructor(s) at the end of the course.

The course syllabus or other first day handouts should also contain:
1. Lecture/Laboratory schedule
2. Type and time (if announced) of examinations (Whenever possible, please avoid giving exams on religious holidays. Also please avoid exam the day after SCAVMA meetings)
3. Grading method and scale for letter grades
4. Policy for make-up exams (if they are offered)

Mid-course/rotation grade warnings must be issued to students if they are not achieving at least a "C" grade average. The notice should be copied to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Class Schedule:
Please review the Official CVM schedule for your instructional period at: http://www.cvm.missouri.edu/acad-calendar.htm. Click on the appropriate instructional period to view class schedules. Report errors to the Office of Academic Affairs.

Instructional Leaders:
A list of instructional leaders and courses can be found on the CVM website at: http://www.cvm.missouri.edu/courses.htm

Submission of Grades:
Grades should be submitted to the appropriate departmental office (for signature) and to the Office of Academic Affairs within 2 days of the completion of a course (CVM Policies and Procedures Manual 1992).
