Dr.
Kristina Narfstrom , the MU Kraeuchi Professor in Veterinary
Ophthalmology, has made significant strides in identifying
some of the genetic causes of blindness. Her microsurgery
techniques that add missing proteins to genetically
defective eyes in dogs have already restored partial
vision. The next step is to refine the process for even
more progress and to make the techniques available to
human medicine ophthalmologists.
Dr. Narfstrom has achieved success in dogs with a type of eye problem that is the cause of 20 percent of all blindness in children. Her work may lead to thousands of kids waking up from surgery in a new world of vision and color.
While significant progress has been made, additional financial resources will speed the research.
