American Veterinary Medical History Society
Annual Meeting
July 22, 2003
Marriott Hotel – Denver, Colorado
The American Veterinary Medical History Society celebrated its 25th
Anniversary with an all day meeting at the Marriott Hotel in Denver,
on July 22, 2003.
President Sebastian Heath presided over the AVMHS business
meeting, which preceded the speakers’ programs. In his opening
remarks Dr. Heath offered to match 10% of any donations that we collected.
The minutes of the AVMHS meeting last year in Nashville were presented.
They appeared in the November 2002 Veterinary Heritage, Volume 25, Number
2. It was moved by Dr. Ewing and seconded by Dr. Detwiler that the minutes
be approved. The motion carried.
Dr. Leo Lemonds presented the Treasurer’s Report. Accountant Bob
Brommer organized it for the AVMHS. It was moved by Dr. McClure and
seconded by Dr. Ewing that the Treasurer’s Report be approved.
The motion carried.
Dr. Sidney Ewing, Chairman of the Nominating Committee; presented the
following slate of officers: Immediate Past President, Sebastian Heath;
President, Sidney Ewing; President Elect, Raffaele Roncalli; Secretary/Treasurer,
Leo Lemonds; and Board Members, Thomas Murnane and Debbie Ladry. George
Beran and Trenton Boyd have another year to serve on the Board. McClure
moved and seconded by Larsen that nominations cease and the slate of
officers as presented be approved. Motion carried.
Dr. Sidney Ewing, Chair of the J. F. Smithcors’ Student Veterinary
History Essay Contest gave a report. Sixteen essays were received from
students representing seven different institutions. The first place
winner was from Washington State University. Interestingly, he was also
first place winner in 2002. Mr. Greg Schmiesing attended the AVMHS meeting
in Denver, the first time that an essay contestant had been invited
to do so under sponsorship of Merck & Company/Merial. The second
and third place winners were both from Oklahoma State University. Merck’s/Merial’s
generous sponsorship makes it possible to award prizes of $750, $500
and $250, respectively for three prize winners and to offer a $500 travel
supplement for one essayist to attend the Society’s annual meeting.
The three judges and chair of the Essay Committee agreed that all sixteen
contestants were eligible to receive The Merck Veterinary Manual and
a one-year subscription to the Veterinary Heritage magazine.
Dr. J. F. Smithcors gave a brief report on the Veterinary Heritage and
this year’s special “25 Year History of the AVMHS.”
Dr. Smithcors put together the history, with David Williams editing
and having it published by Purdue University.
Dr. Phyllis Larsen, Chairman of the Finance Committee, discussed a proposed
amendment to the By Laws. The proposed amendment was to add a Finance
Committee to Article 8 of the By Laws.
Section 3. Finance Committee
The Finance Committee shall be appointed by the Board of Directors for
the purpose of assisting the Board in overseeing and protecting all
aspects of the Society’s financial duties and resources and reporting
on them to the Board at least annually and to the membership at large
when appropriate.
The Committee shall consist of the Treasurer and at least two other
members appointed for staggered two-year terms.
The current Finance Committee moved the approval of the amendment. Motion
carried.
Dr. Susan Jones reported on the Committee of the World
Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine.
Annual Meetings of the WAHVM
Last year’s meeting, to be held in Wittenberg, Germany, was cancelled
due to the catastrophic flooding in that city. This fall, the 34th International
Congress on the History of Veterinary Medicine will be held at the Faculty
of Veterinary Medicine, UNAM City University in Mexico City, September
24-27. AVMHS member Dr. Bob Dunlop will be one of the keynote speakers.
Registration forms and the program details are available from Dr. Jones.
In 2005, we will be hosting the 36th International Congress, in Minneapolis.
The Congress will be held in conjunction with the AVMA Annual Convention
and the World Veterinary Association Annual Congress.
We Need More Committee Members
In preparation for the 2005 Congress, I (Susan Jones) will be forming
the following sub-committees of the WAHVM Committee: Program (Will propose
and invite speakers, create the schedule of speakers and the list of
posters to be presented); Financial (Will work closely with the AVMHS
Secretary/Treasurer, will solicit grants from corporations and foundations,
collect registration fees and keep the budget); and Local Arrangements
(Will interface with the AVMA to make arrangements for meeting and hotel
rooms, for meals, and for a field trip). Anyone with ties to the University
of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine please contact Dr. Jones,
as I would also like to get the College involved.
Dr. Leon Saunders Wins the Cheiron Medal
The WAHVM’s highest honor, the Cheiron Medal, was awarded to American
Dr. Leon Saunders last year. The AVMHS and the Dutch Society for the
History of Veterinary Medicine nominated Dr. Saunders. Due to the cancellation
of the Wittenberg meeting, his medal was presented to him by Dr. Phil
Teigen (the AVMHS representative in 2002) at a ceremony at the University
of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
First Motion:
That this 2003 Annual Meeting verify that Dr. Bob Dunlop is to serve
as the AVMHS representative at the WAHVM General Assembly at Mexico
City, September 24-27, 2003.
Second Motion:
That this 2003 Annual Meeting approve the submission of the following
two themes for the WAHVM Congress to be held in Minneapolis in 2005.
1. History of Veterinary Pharmaceuticals; and 2. History of Veterinary
Medicine in War and Peace. These themes will be presented by the AVMHS
representative to the WAHVM General Assembly in September 2003.
The WAHVM Committee report was approved.
Dr. Leo Lemonds, Chairman of the 25th Anniversary Committee
gave a brief report. In particular, he gave thanks to Dr. Elizabeth
Lawrence for obtaining a $10,000.00 Grant from the Donaldson Trust to
help finance this year’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. Dr. Lawrence
also had obtained the speakers for the program. Dr. Lemonds also gave
a big thanks to his yearlong Anniversary Committee of Dr.’s Susan
Jones, Bob McClure and Sidney Ewing.
Dr. Robert McClure asked for help in keeping the AVMHS
Web Site up to date. It was noted that we have obtained 8 or 10 new
members through the Web Site. Dr. Robert McClure reported that he and
Dr. Hendrix had discussed the development of an “on line”
course “History of Veterinary Medicine” for students at
the veterinary medical schools and colleges. They would like the comments,
involvement and contributions of others interested in the project. Please
contact them.
It was mentioned that Dr. Roscoe Moore Jr., had sent
a check for $500 to become a Life Member of the AVMHS. After some discussion,
Dr. McClure moved, seconded by Dr. Larsen, that approval be given to
$500 being the amount for a Life Membership. Motion carried.
A discussion of Dr. Phyllis Larsen’s “News
and Comments” in the Veterinary Heritage followed. It was agreed
that this added greatly to the Veterinary Heritage.
Distribution of the Veterinary Heritage to Veterinary
Schools was discussed. It was agreed to send the Heritage to all Veterinary
Schools in United States and Canada gratis. Since schools outside North
America take quite a bit of extra postage—they will continue to
pay for their Veterinary Heritages.
Dr. Susan Jones asked for a moment of silent prayer for
two of our deceased members, Drs. Patricia O’Conner and Frank
Loew.
Meeting adjourned.
