- Admissions Committee Readmission Hearing Procedure (2007)
1. When a student fails to meet the academic requirements of the college of veterinary medicine, they will be dismissed from the curriculum. The Office of Academic Affairs will deliver a letter to the student by hand or by registered mail. The letter will detail the reasons for dismissal.
2. The student may, within 30 days of sending the letter, petition the Committee on Admissions and Scholarship for readmission. The letter of petition should be delivered to the Office of Academic Affairs and should include a reason for the failure to meet academic standards. The letter should also include the student’s plan to prevent a recurrence of academic issues should they be readmitted.
3. The committee on Admissions and Scholarship will be provided with the student’s letter, transcript, and any additional evidence provided by the student. The Office of Academic Affairs will schedule a readmissions hearing that includes the admissions committee, the student, the instructor who assigned the deficient grade that resulted in the student's dismissal, and the ADA officer, if appropriate.
The committee is consists of 5 individuals: 4 faculty members and one veterinarian appointed through the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association. At least 4 committee members or alternate members must be present for the hearing to proceed. In the case where four committee members are participating, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will serve to break a tie.
Hearing format:
1. The student will be asked to give an opening statement. The student, the admissions committee members, and the admissions advisor may be present for this portion of the hearing. The student may not bring legal counsel to the hearing. The student may, however, bring an individual to the hearing for support, but that individual will not participate in the hearing.
2. The committee members will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the student.
3. The course coordinator for the course that resulted in a student's dismissal will then enter the hearing. Specifically:
a. The faculty member will be asked to verify the performance of the student in the course.
b. The faculty member will be asked to provide statistics on performance in the class (grading scale, distribution of grades).
c. The faculty member would be asked for any other comments regarding the student's participation in the class.
d. Committee members will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the instructor.
5. The student will be given the opportunity to respond to the report of the instructor.
6. The instructor will be excused from the hearing.
7. If the student has ADA accommodations, the CVM ADA Officer will be asked to give testimony detailing the accommodations required by the student, and the CVM's compliance with these accommodations. The committee will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the compliance officer.
8. The compliance officer will be excused.
9. The committee will be given a chance to ask additional questions of the student.
10. The student will then be given the opportunity to make a closing statement.
At the conclusion of the hearing, the Committee will deliberate and determine whether or not to readmit the student. A vote for readmission requires a simple majority. The committee may choose to conditionally readmit the student. The student will be informed in writing of the committee decision by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. A copy of the letter from the Associate Dean will be placed in the student's permanent record.
